Roy, Jim, and David. Taken in the winter of 1940-1941 from the front door of the Newton residence at 138 Rust Avenue in Big Rapids, Michigan. (Years later in the 1950s or 60s, the city of Big Rapids renumbered the Rust Avenue street addresses, changing 138 to 208 Rust Avenue, in anticipation of extending Clark street through to Rust, dividing our block of Rust (between Division and State St.) and the corresponding block of Sanborn in half. The extension never happened.) Across the street to the right is the Andres house, and to the left is the Kingsley house. It was a great location in Big Rapids a couple of blocks east to downtown, about 3 blocks northwest to the swimming pool, about 5 blocks to Lincoln School (later turned into a library), where Jim, Dave, and Glen attended elementary school, about 4 blocks to Brookside Elementary School, where Glen attended 3rd-6th grade, and 4 blocks to the Big Rapids High School that Jim and Dave graduated from and Glen attended until the new high school (which is now a middle school) was built a couple of blocks farther to the northeast. The United Church that the family attended and for which Dorothy served as organist, was just a half block east of the house.
David and Jim taken in the summer of 1941 by height markers on the garage. You can see that Jim had reached 4 ft. tall and David was about 3 5-1/2 tall.
